| Review: Lee Daniels' The Butler (2013) *** 1/2 (out of 4) A look at fifty years of American history through the eyes of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a black man who saw his father killed As a young man, but manages to break free of the cotton fields and serve as a butler at the White House for eight different presidents. Director Lee Daniels takes a pretty important topic, and manages to make it interesting for most people. I say this because the film appears to be attacked for being too mainstream, but I think the director did a very good job telling this story in a way where you can enjoy many before them. It will certainly not hurt you to get Whitaker on one of the best presentations of his career as a butler that we see grow and change throughout the history of America. The film very much like a Forest Gump feel like going through the early days when blacks were still working in the cotton fields until the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and of course the events that got Nixon himself into. I really thought the director managed to tell a certain part of the story and keep it very entertaining throughout. Some people call racist movie, but really? Cmon now. The presentation was absolutely the highlight of the film with Whitaker a fantastic job. I really loved how the script he will change his whole life, like a real person, and I think that's perfect Whitaker captures it all. Whitaker directs the way to bring you to this event, as well as care about their own personal stories in which the center of the image. The supporting cast includes strong performances from Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, Terrance Howard and a wide range of cameos from Clarence Williams III, Robin Williams, Vanessa Redgrave, John Cusack, Olivia Washington, Liev Schreiber, Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda among others. I will say that I found it very strange that none of the actors really made the sound or appearance of the President that they were playing. The Lee Daniels said Butler certainly loving care from her director and even 132-minute it will never feel long. |
